As a bicyclist, it is critical to understand the risks that you face regardless of your age, gender and other factors. That said, cyclists and drivers should take a look at data on cyclist injuries and deaths in order to understand when the chances of serious injuries and deaths become especially high. Some bicyclists, such as young children, those without experience and those riding in particularly dangerous areas have an even higher chance of becoming involved in a serious accident.
Sadly, bike accidents lead to the loss of many lives and leave even more cyclists injured on an annual basis.
Risks associated with fatal bike accidents
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that about one out of every three deadly bike accidents involves alcohol. Also, data shows that a majority of fatal bicycle accidents occur on urban roads. 27% of fatal bike accidents happen in intersections, and roughly 64% take place outside of intersections. When bike accidents happen outside of an intersection, vehicles sometimes travel at faster speeds, increasing the likelihood of serious injuries and death.
According to CDC statistics, almost 1,000 cyclists lose their lives each year, and those between 55 and 69 have higher death rates than bicyclists of other age groups.
Statistics on cyclist injuries
The CDC says that more than 130,000 bicyclists become injured on the road each year. Furthermore, data shows that males are five times more likely to suffer injuries in bike accidents in comparison to females. Out of all age groups, children, teenagers and young adults have the highest chance of becoming hurt in a bike accident. In fact, almost one out of every three bike accident injuries treated in emergency departments involve cyclists between 10 and 24.
If a reckless driver causes you to suffer an injury or lose a loved one, hold them accountable.
