About US 9 in New Jersey
U.S. Route 9 or US 9 is a highway that runs north of Laurel, Delaware to Champlain, New York. In the state of New Jersey, US 9 is the longest U.S. highway, running from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal across the Delaware Bay to Lewes, Delaware north to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, Bergen County. From there, the route, along with US 1 and I-95 continue to New York City. US 9 is mostly a two-lane undivided highway from North Cape May north to Ocean County’s Toms River, and is closely parallel to the Garden State Parkway, running near the Jersey Shore. The route transitions into a multilane divided road upon approaching the Monmouth County.
NJ U.S. Route 9 Accidents
Motor vehicle accidents are not uncommon in many portions of US 9 in New Jersey, and these range from motorcycle accidents, passenger car collisions, SUV rollovers, truck accidents, and even school bus accidents. The damage created by a motor vehicle accident on Highway 9 can be made worse when any of the vehicles involved run above the speed limit, especially when a large commercial truck is involved.
When a collision occurs, the crash energy is increased by the vehicle’s speed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a collision that involves a vehicle with a speed of 65 mph or faster is more than twice as likely to result in a fatality than an accident that involves a vehicle running at 45 to 50 mph. In a speeding collision, the risk of serious injuries or death is extremely high, as any or both the colliding vehicles can be crushed, and their safety features such as airbags and safety belts would not be able to protect the vehicle’s occupants from the force of impact.
