Highways only make up about 1.2% of the length of all the roads in the United States, but they carry nearly a quarter of the nation’s passenger car traffic and nearly half of all truck traffic. The heavy traffic on highways often causes accidents to occur. For more than a decade, the New Jersey Route 4 accident attorneys at The Grossman Law Firm have been representing people injured on NJ highways on a contingency basis, including those injured on NJ 4. About Route 4 in New Jersey
New Jersey Route 4 or NJ 4 is a state highway in Bergen County and Passaic County that stretches 10.83 miles from NJ 20 in Paterson east to an interchange with I-95, US 1/9, US 46, and US 9W at the George Washington Bridge approach in Fort Lee. NJ 4, which is officially named as the Mackay Highway, has up to six lanes with 40 to 50 mph speed limits. A few businesses are located along some portions of the route, particularly in Paramus, where N4 passes through a major shopping area that consists of malls. NJ 4 intersects with many important roads, including Fair Lawn’s NJ 208, the Garden State Parkway, and NJ 17 in Paramus.
NJ 4 Accidents
New Jersey Route 4 is one of the state’s most congested highways. Much of this route has three lanes, but this was made possible by sacrificing shoulders in several towns like Hackensack and Paramus. Eastbound Route 4 has two lanes through much of its portion in Teaneck, and this design causes a morning rush bottleneck in the area. In general, traffic congestion on NJ 4 has a negative impact on the safety of motorists due to higher speed variance among the vehicles between and within the road’s lanes, as well as the erratic driving behavior of motorists in the presence of congestion.
There can be less fatal accidents on highways if vehicles are driven at lower speeds in traffic congestion, but accidents are more frequent on congested highways although their consequences are generally not that serious. Drivers stuck in congested traffic are forced to waste gas, time, money, and energy, which can make them impatient and irritated. Commonly, impatient or rushing drivers tend to make unsafe driving maneuvers to get past the congested traffic, one vehicle at a time. As a result, collisions occur.
