About US 130 in New Jersey
A north-south U.S. highway, U.S. Route 130 or US 130 is located entirely within New Jersey. This 83.46-mile route runs from Interstate 295 and US 40 at Deep Water in Salem County’s Pennsville Township. It continues south at NJ 49 north to U.S. Route 1 in North Brunswick Township of Middlesex County where NJ 171 proceeds north to New Brunswick. This route runs concurrent with US 30, its parent route, near Camden. For its entire length, US 130 runs at a close distance with Interstate 295 south of Bordentown and several miles from the New Jersey Turnpike. Much of the route’s length has four to six divided lanes. U.S. Route 130 stretches through several towns, including Penns Grove, Westville, Bridgeport, Camden, Burlington, Pennsauken, Bordentown, and Hightstown.
New Jersey US 130 Accidents
US 130 is one of the state’s most dangerous highways due to the high number of serious and fatal motor vehicle, motorbike and pedestrian accidents that occur on it. In fact, US 130 has been getting much attention as NJ’s lawmakers propose more sparkling red lights, more pronounced crosswalks, and more stringent traffic fines to traffic violators. Apart from vehicle collisions and rollover accidents occurring on US 130, it has also garnered a reputation as the state’s deadliest road for pedestrians, as stated in 2008 by the Tri-Star Transportation Campaign.
Critics and analysts say that the highway’s design is not safe for pedestrians and bicyclists. Just like other highways prone to pedestrian accidents, Route 130 has busy multi-lane corridors with high speed limits and poorly marked crosswalks. It could have been safer if it had imposed lower speeds in pedestrian areas, had more sidewalks and crosswalks, and had bump out curbs that reduce lanes at crossings. Motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents on US 130 can cause a tremendous burden on injured victims and their families, including emotional and physical injuries, disability, disfigurement, and even death.
