About Interstate 78 in New Jersey
Interstate 78 in New Jersey is known as the Phillipsburg-Newark Expressway or the Newark Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike. The I-78 runs in the northern part of the state from I-78 Toll Bridge over the Delaware River at the state line of Pennsylvania in Phillipsburg, Warren County, east to the Holland Tunnel at the Hudson River at the state line of New York in Jersey City, Hudson County.
New Jersey I-78 Accidents
Many traffic accidents occur on Highway 78, mainly because of the large commercial trucks that frequently travel this route. For most average motorists, those big rigs, tractor-trailers, tanker trucks, 18-wheelers and semi trucks seem to be road dangers because no single roadway on Highway 78 in NJ appears wider than three lanes.
Moreover, the pavement condition of some parts of the highway contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Serious and fatal accidents have plagued some portions of I-78 for years, although the rate has somewhat declined since concrete barriers were placed on the median west of I-287.
At the east of New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 78 becomes Newark Bay Extension. Traffic delays in this area are usually between a half hour and one hour during normal travel hours. In general, signage on I-78 is good. The setup on east of NJ 24, however, is quite difficult to follow because the ramps and exits can confuse even a lifelong New Jerseyan motorist.
New Jersey has serious traffic problems in some areas, and NJ motorists call for widening of highways, including I-78, in order to obtain smooth flow of traffic and to avoid or at least minimize the occurrence of Highway 78 accidents. Many accidents occurring on Highway 78 are serious and even fatal, and the common causes of such mishaps are speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and for some, unsafe roadway conditions.
