About I-287 in New Jersey
An auxiliary Interstate Highway in the states of New Jersey and New York, Interstate 287 or I-287 is a partial beltway around the city of New York, which serves half of New Jersey and New York’s Rockland and Westchester counties. The I-287 runs north-south in NJ and east-west in New York, following a horseshoe-shaped route from the New Jersey Turnpike of I-95 in Edison Township clockwise to the New England Thruway of I-95 in Rye, New York. The northernmost part of NJ I-287 passes through mountainous surroundings.
NJ I-287 Accidents
Interstate 287 is one of New Jersey’s busiest freeways, apart from the Turnpike and the Parkway. In most of the freeway’s length, it maintains six lanes, which are deemed inadequate for handling the large number of vehicles using the freeway. Regardless of the time of day, motorists commonly face some congestion on I-287. Traffic significantly slows down and even comes to a complete halt between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. during workdays. Sometimes, this freeway is not the most immediate route to take, but it is the only option many motorists have in central New Jersey’s southern part. It’s also the only way of reaching the state’s northwestern part.
It’s oftentimes difficult for motorists to drive safely south of I-287 due to traffic congestion and poor road conditions in the highway’s older sections. Driving through this area often results in delays and even accidents, but the pavement conditions eventually get better after reaching the north sections of the freeway. The pavement in the southern section from exit 6 to NJ 440 obviously requires repaving due to its extremely worn and cracking concrete slabs and poorly patched big holes. These road conditions are extremely dangerous for motorists, especially when drivers drive at high speeds. Major work is needed to make Interstate 287 safer for motorists.
